Threatened by the rise of the water of the lake Nasser, Abu Simbel was saved from water. Started at the end of the year 1963, work leads in January 1966 to the installation of the first stone of Abu Simbel in its new site. The inauguration takes place on September 22, 1968, but the work of filling was completed only in 1972. 900 people worked for this rescue. The two temples were cut out in 1036 blocks of which some weighed 30 tons, then reconstituted 60 metres higher.
