Everywhere in the world, water goes down from the sky - everywhere, except in Egypt: here, water is daughter of the ground. In a valley where it almost never rains, the Nile is the only source of moisture and irrigation. On the 6671 km that the Nile traverses, Egypt occupies the last thousand. If the river widens in delta before drowning in the Mediterranean, it gives life everywhere else only to a narrow valley between two deserts.
